Proof, a phenomenal success on Broadway and the West End, is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best New Play.
Part mathematical mystery, part family drama, part comedy romance, Proof explores the close relationship between genius and madness through the story of Catherine the gifted daughter of Robert, a mathematical genius.
Catherine has sacrificed her own promising career in mathematics to care for her sick father over several tiring years. Having twice revolutionised the mathematical field by the age of 22, Robert’s mental health is in decline. Following his eventual death, Catherine’s estranged sister Claire arrives from New York to sell the family home and take her sister back with her, believing she needs professional help to prevent her from following her father’s path to madness.
Catherine is torn between her sister’s concern for her health and the affections of her father’s excitable, mathematician student, Hal who idolises Robert and is searching through his final scribblings in the vain hope he may uncover a brilliant formula, reminiscent of his earlier genius. What Hal discovers in Robert’s attic sets in motion this moving and intriguing mystery.
