Cyclone Larry’s personal debris
20 March 2006. Cyclone Larry crosses the Coast at Innisfail causing $800 million damage and a media frenzy. In The August Moon, a world-premiere, Queensland Theatre Company presents the human stories of Cyclone Larry.
Four days after Cyclone Larry devastated the community of Innisfail, playwrights Adam Grossetti and Jean-Marc Russ travelled north to see the devastation for themselves. What they found there shocked them. Brian Young, a long-term resident at The August Moon Caravan Park had died during the cyclone, sparking a trial-by-media of the park’s owners. Headlines damning the couple for their lack of care blazed across newspapers. But a true account of what really happened that night was never told; the owner’s side of the story never heard.
Directed by Russ, The August Moon is the story of the people of Innisfail, intertwined with Russ and Grossetti’s sometimes awkward investigation as they try to communicate the human emotion and drama they were experiencing first hand. It’s a work that is brash, funny and kind-hearted.
The August Moon makes use of photos taken at the scene just days after the cyclone hit and includes documentary video, news footage and live audio recordings that tell you the real story behind the headlines. It breaks from traditional theatre, using multimedia technology and capturing the audience from the moment they enter the foyer.
Playwright and Director Jean-Marc Russ says “It’s a play about the resilience of the human spirit and overcoming adversity. The August Moon is not just a disaster story, it’s a genuine tragedy about a community not only dealing with the effects of the cyclone, but also what they felt was unfair reporting.”
