Three Sisters | Brisbane Festival 2008 Print
“I cannot imagine a more delicate, luminous and emotionally piercing production… heartbreaking simplicity.” The Times London

Brisbane Festival 2008 is proud to announce the staging of Anton Chekhov’s celebrated Three Sisters, arguably one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century. Directed by Declan Donnellan and performed by a stellar Russian ensemble, this production continues to be one of the most outstanding on the international theatre circuit.

Commencing its season from Tuesday 29 July at the Playhouse, Chekhov’s Three Sisters is an intricate and dark play set at the very end of the nineteenth century. It is a sweeping family saga, which tells the tale of Olga, Irina and Masha whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of the glamorous officer Veshinin to their remote town. The family’s eternal struggle to find meaning in life is chartered by the changing moods of the play.

“Almost everything in Declan Donnellan’s fresh, gripping staging feels charged, at times almost feverish, avoiding the usual autumnal melancholy, although there is one beautiful exception. When the youngest sister, Irina, forlornly yearns for Moscow at the end of the second act, repeating the name of the city three times, the Russian version of the word sounds like the plaintive murmuring of a homesick dove. It proves intensely and unexpectedly moving.” The Daily Telegraph, (UK)

With its stellar Russian cast, Three Sisters will be one of the hottest tickets for Brisbane Festival 2008.
