‘Miss Dunn…we’re living in an age of consent…’
The "success du scandale" of the 2001 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and fresh from a critically acclaimed Adelaide Fringe Festival season The Age of Consent can now be seen in Sydney for the first time.
Acutely topical, darkly satirical and brutally uncompromising – The Age of Consent entwines two monologues exploring the shattering of childhood innocents. It is a sharp, witty and compassionate insight into the minds of two very real and very extreme characters.
This play combines the stories of two of the most publicised and heinous crimes world media has ever covered. The murder of toddler Jamie Bulger in England, and America's child sideshow saga: the Jon-Benet Ramsay murder.
And in contemporary Sydney, Bill Henson has brought the issue of ‘consent’ even more to the forefront…
An Actors Centre graduate, Caroline Kemp shines as Jon-Benet's mother. Desperate to better her station in life, she pushes her 6 year old daughter into dangerous territory. An ambitious, single, stage mother, who will stop at nothing to make her child a star.
Ivan Donato, a recent NIDA graduate is compelling as Timmy, a young man in his final days at a juvenile detention centre, having been convicted for the murder of a child when he was only a young boy himself. Taken from the story of toddler Jamie Bulger’s murder, Timmy is questioning his past actions and how the world will receive him.
Since graduating from the prestigious NIDA Directing course, up and coming director Shannon Murphy has tackled this play head-on. Shannon has already received acclaim in the US for her direction with the Florida Players; her most recent work was as assistant director with Wayne Blair in "Jesus Hopped the A Train" (B Sharp 2007) and director of “My Name is Rachel Corrie” (B Sharp 2008).
The Age of Consent is a moral minefield. This play challenges its audience to consider the fluidity between child and adult, and how we make our fellow humans pay for their mistakes.
"Bold, magnificently sympathetic and notorious, "The Age of Consent" is a significant, considered, shocking and finally breathtaking drama…a triumph…an artful tale….from the opening scene, this consummate work of art grasps hold of the viewer and refuses to let go. " - Adelaide Theatre Guide 2008
