After sell out seasons in Edinburgh, London and Melbourne, Peter Houghton’s award winning comedy, The Pitch, is about to make its mark on Brisbane Powerhouse, hitting the stage running from 16 – 20 September 2008.
It’s Walter’s one shot at the big time…and there’s a lot at stake. It’s a chance for immortality in celluloid…a chance to prove to the world that an Aussie has got what it takes to make it in Hollywood…and maybe it’s a chance to win back his ex-girlfriend who dumped him for a born again Christian.
A hilarious satire about the trials and tribulations of an Aussie trying to make it big in Hollywood, this critically acclaimed show, written and performed by Peter Houghton and directed by Anne Browning, is a very funny antidote to the many clichéd and overdone Hollywood blockbusters we are all familiar with.
Minutes before he must face a panel of Hollywood heavyweights, Walter Weinermann, a fledgling screenwriter, desperately practises the ‘pitch’ for his movie complete with hilarious impressions of the actors he envisages in the film.
Originally staged at La Mama in 2006, it was remounted by Malthouse Theatre in 2007 for the Melbourne Comedy Festival where it extended its season and sold out before moving onto success at both The Edinburgh Festival and the Carpenters Gallery in London, winning the Green Room Awards for best Actor and Best New Australian Play.
Peter Houghton himself calls the play a romp, saying “People who’ve seen the show will know that it’s a pretty accessible piece about Hollywood cinema and its clichés.”
Peter works as an actor, writer and director in theatre, film and television and is currently a performer in Newstopia with Shaun Micalleff for SBS. His numerous film and television credits include Three Dollars, Stingers, Halifax, The Big News, The Late Report and Blue Heelers, for which he was short listed for an AFI award.
