Wolf Under The Bed | Theater Sgaramusch Print
“cunningly constructed, hugely entertaining network of old legends and new myths about wolves, acted out with just the right degree of scare-your-friends conviction and bravura holings.” The Herald, Scotland

12 stories, 3 actors, 1 guitar

It’s often said that kids say the darnedest things so a Swiss theatre company found inspiration by getting them to put pen to paper.

Using the power of a child’s imagination, Theater Sgaramusch has created a simple yet stirring production that sends shivers down the spine. Wolf Under the Bed is based on 12 scary stories written by primary school students from their home town of Schaffhausen.

On stage, three bored Finnish folk sit in a lonely hut somewhere in the forest. Having seen tracks in the snow outside, they start telling each other stories about injured, sneaky, bewitched, and always hungry wolves.

Some of the stories are funny, some are eerie, but as the night wears on they get more and more outrageous. Tales about fear and evil deeds include funny and dry observations; as well as amusing fantasies on, and about, the archetypal wolf.

From a footy-playing wolf to a lone lupine bitten by a scorpion who can only be saved by a child’s liver, this shrewd production moves at lightning speed with multiple role changes.

Like a child recalling a tall tale, it quickly becomes harder to tell where one story ends and another begins. The cast soon lose themselves in an imaginary labyrinth. Will they ever be able to get out?

Much of the plot is told in direct language with the cast using limited props to tease out tension. A winter coat becomes a wolf, while a wooden stool is used for extra paw power.

With a pulsating live music score, Wolf Under the Bed is a hugely entertaining production which explores kids’ imaginary fears with just the right degree of scare-your-pants-off spookiness.

“A completely delightful exploration…of the idea of human fear of the big bad beast” The Scotsman
