Purple Haze Print
Australia Pro Arte is pleased to announce the details of its fourth Subscription concert Purple Haze.

Conductor Benjamin Northey has recently returned from his conducting debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall to conduct this stellar chamber orchestra featuring the world premiere of Divertimento: Nolan’s Backyard by Christopher Willcox, and the timeless Mozart Clarinet Concerto to be performed by Paul Dean.

The concert will also feature the talents of Australia’s leading string players including Rebecca Chan who was recently announced as the winner of the String Finals of the ABC Young Performer of the Year. Chan and her fellow musicians will perform Lutoslawski’s Funeral Music in memory of Bela Bartok and Haydn’s Farewell Symphony.

Northey’s performance with the London Philharmonic comes as part of his 2007 selection as one of three conductors worldwide to the International Conductor's Academy of the Allianz Cultural Foundation. The Academy involves a mentorship with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra and conductors Vladimir Jurovsky and Christoph von Dohnanyi.

Sydney-born composer, Christopher Willcock, completed his studies in pianoforte under Alexander Sverjensky at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and in composition under Peter Sculthorpe at the University of Sydney.  He was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1977. In 1998 was the winner of the Albert H. Maggs Composition Award for Akhmatova Requiem.

In 2004 he was engaged as composer-in-residence for The Melbourne Chorale for whom he wrote Miserere and Etiquette with angels. In this new work "Nolan" refers to the Australian painter Sidney Nolan, and his "backyard" is nothing less than the Australian continent.

Paul Dean is a leading Australian clarinetist who is the Artistic Director of Southern Cross Soloists.  As soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, Paul Dean has performed in Norway, England, Japan, the USA and Canada.
