The Wharf Sessions, the new free regular series of post-show gigs at The Wharf, Sydney Theatre Company’s harbourside home, continue on Friday 4 July 2008.
This time the gig features the vocal-driven, lush-textured, electro-acoustic pop of MA, commencing in the bar immediately after that night’s performance of The Great by Tony McNamara.
MA is singer Victoria White and composer Drew Crawford. Blessed with a ripping set of vocal chords and an impeccable ear for harmony and melody, Victoria performed extensively in New Zealand with her band Loup Garou. Arriving in Australia, she has had an underground smash, Thrill Popper, recorded with the Hive and featured on Triple J’s Hottest 100.
Classically trained Drew is best known for his opera Eugene & Roie (Sydney Festival 2004) as well as scores and commissions for some of Australia’s major arts companies (Company B, Bell Shakespeare, Sydney Opera House Trust, One Extra Dance Co.). Collaborations included Belvoir’s B Sharp alt-cabaret hit Cover, girl, before forming MA in 2004. Their recent debut recording Across The City And Into Your Room is an atmospheric collection exploring the nature of love, sex and self-preservation, drawing comparisons with Bjork, Portishead and Goldfrapp.
MA’s live show also features Robbie Mudrazija (Entropic) on drums, Milica Stefanovic (Extended Family) on bass, and Martin Kay (Continuum Sax) on saxophone.
Entry to the gig is free and available to all. No booking is necessary. Drinks at discounted prices are available for purchase from The Wharf Restaurant Bar
