The Inhabited Man | Rear Windows Ensemble Print
Inhabited ManYesterday’s warrior faces the cold reality of tomorrow.

The Inhabited Man, written by Richard Murphet and co-directed with Leisa Shelton, chronicles two days in the life of a Vietnam War veteran who is striving to unravel the memories of horror and pain knotted up inside him.

Leo’s a security guard at Springs Motel - a Vietnam vet, haunted by his past. He’s a time bomb ticking to midnight. The new couple in Cabin 7 are acting strange...security risks. But the more he investigates, the more his ghosts rise up to engulf him. Tonight Leo’s ready to explode…and he could take us all with him.

A richly textured play, The Inhabited Man explores the intricate matrix of thoughts, desires, encounters and possibilities that impact this one man in just two days. Through fragments of dreams, text, song, speech Hollywood film clips and montages from pop culture, the multiple layers of this one man’s life are unveiled.

The Inhabited Man follows on from Shelton and Murphet’s (2003) critically acclaimed production of The Inhabited Woman, which in a similar vein pulled apart the psyche of one character, an ordinary woman.

Shelton and Murphet have been collaborating for the past ten years and have co-directed major works including Howard Barker’s Wounds to the Face and Dolores in the Department Store, which was short-listed for the Patrick White Award.

Shelton has run physical theatre and directors’ courses nationally and internationally and was Head of Physical Performance and New Work at VCA Drama from 1998 to 2003. She currently runs the Postgraduate Animateuring course at VCA Drama. Murphet has written over ten plays and directed over fifty. He is Head of School and Head of Post-Graduate Theatre Studies at VCA Drama

The Inhabited Man has been developed through the FULL TILT creative development program at the Arts Centre.
