One of Western Australia’s most outstanding composers, Lindsay Vickery returns to Perth for the prestigious Scale Variable concert series presented by Tura New Music at the Art Gallery of Western Australia on Saturday, June 21.
The Scale Variable event promises to deliver Vickery’s renowned theoretical wizardry with entertaining music and capture the composer’s creative breadth and depth from the hard-hitting number Dice Game written in 1995 to the uber-cool Eraflage, finished in 2008. The two-hour program will allow the audience to follow his musical developments and trademark synthesising of traditional instruments with independent automated conducting and live electronic sound transformation.
Now based in Singapore, composer and performer Lindsay Vickery has toured widely across Europe, North America and Asia, being involved in a wide range of concert, dance and theatre productions with such luminous talents such as Skadada, Stelarc, Robyn Archer, and Chrissie Parrott. Frequently performed and commissioned, his music has been described as "having a truly original voice of sustained intensity".
Vickery will appear with the Cloud Chamber Orchestra, a 12 piece ensemble of hand-selected masters of chamber instruments and electronic gadgetry, including Taryn Richards, Chris Rich, Dan Russel, Sara Herriman, Charlie McCarthy, Tristan Parr, Philip Waldron, Adam Pinto, Paul Tanner, Chris Grant, Mari Sakata, Robyn Sarti, and Stuart James.
Artistic Director of Tura New Music said that this special Scale Variable concert was a one off opportunity to engage in an intimate retrospective of the works of Lindsay Vickery. “It is extremely rare that an entire event would be programmed to solely feature the works by a living Western Australian composer,” he said. “However the works of this composer demand it. Throughout Vickery’s relatively young career, Vickery has accumulated an astounding quantity and quality of music.”
Tura New Music is recognised and awarded nationally and internationally as one of Australia’s peak bodies for the production and presentation of new music events, resource agency, promoter, and a support network for Western Australian new music artists and audiences. 2008 sees Tura New Music celebrate 21 years of promoting, widening participation and access to the arts providing entertaining, educational and cultural activities that enrich the lives of Western Australians and lovers of New Music around the world.
