Director Nigel Jamieson brings a cast of almost 40 performers to the stage of Sydney Theatre for Gallipoli, one of the most ambitious productions ever presented by Sydney Theatre Company. A multi-media work featuring not only the finely honed dramatic skills of the STC Actors Company but also choral work, aerial performance, choreography, live music and huge projected images across multiple tiers of set, the production re-examines a complex period in history at the very heart of Australian identity. Performances are from 25 July to 23 August, opening on 30 July 2008.
Drawing on personal letters, diaries, film footage, photographs, memoirs, contemporary reportage, songs and official documents, the piece re-explores the conflict from multiple perspectives – those of the soldiers, their leaders, their adversaries and those at home.
The production grapples with the legend and the myths that have grown up around this bloodiest of battles on the Gallipoli peninsular in 1915-16 and how it captured the collective imagination to become embedded in the Australian psyche. Going beyond the familiar symbols and tales of unquestionable bravery and sacrifice, Gallipoli explores what drove so many young people to enlist, the glamorising of warfare before and since and how the gruesome realities of international conflict remain as relevant today.
The STC Actors Company are joined by 23 Third Year Acting students from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), following the success of STC’s previous collaboration with NIDA for The Lost Echo, directed by Barrie Kosky in 2006.
Nigel Jamieson is one of Australia’s most distinctive theatre creators. His creations have included spectacular events such as the Tin Symphony during the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the closing ceremony of the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, and more recently, opening celebrations launching Liverpool as European Capital of Culture 2008. His award-winning Adelaide Festival hit Theft of Sita has been seen in New York and throughout Europe and his recent Honour Bound, about the incarceration of David Hicks at Guantanamo Bay, was performed to acclaim in Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
