Penny was born to perform and does so wonderfully well. Together with her super musicians, this top jazz vocalist will swing a lunch hour to remember. If she was good enough to support Dame Kiri Te Kanawa…!
Penny was born to perform, starting singing and dancing at the age of three, and classical piano training at eight. Penny also performed in many local musical theatre productions, including ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘Grease’, both performed at the Quarry amphitheatre. It was here that it seemed her future would lie, until a night at the Perth Jazz Society ignited a passion for jazz.
Inspired, Penny graduated with an Associate Diploma in Jazz Vocals at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 1996. During this time, Penny was a resident vocalist with the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra from 1995 - 1996, and was featured on their 1996 release, ‘Night and Day’.
Penny has made several appearances at the Perth Jazz Society, both with her own quartet, as well as being a featured performer at the annual ‘Ladies of Jazz’ concerts (1996-1999, 2002, 2005). She has been a regular artist at the Rottnest Festival in past years, and has also made several performances at the Perth Concert Hall both as a featured performer and as a part of the West Australian Conservatorium’s Jazz Vocal Ensemble.
Penny has been a member of the jazz a cappella group ‘The Mistletones’, singing throughout the City of Perth, along with co-member and founder Libby Hammer, Shane Pooley and Lindsay Vickery (1997-1999). In 1998 Penny played at several jazz venues in Galway, Ireland, along with former bass player Damian Evans, now based in Galway.
In 2000 Penny was a part of the big band tribute to the ‘Great Women in Jazz‘, and under the musical direction of Graham Lyall, featured in a set honouring the great Carmen McRae. Penny has also featured as a backing vocalist in the funk/fusion big band ‘Hothouse’, and performed with them at many venues including the Varga Lounge, the 2000 Telethon Ball and the 2000 Geraldton Sea Spectacular.
Penny was a featured local artist at the Fremantle International Jazz Festival in 2002, and also featured with her quartet at the York Jazz Festival in 2004 and 2005. In 2006, Penny supported Dame Kiri Te Kanawa with the Mike Pigneguy Sextet. She also has an original track on the Jazzaziz II CD, released in 2005.
Penny takes influence from a wide array of vocalists, such as Carmen McRae, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Joni Mitchell, singer-songwriters such as James Taylor and Ben Folds, through to contemporaries such as Kurt Elling, Holly Cole and Beady Belle.
Penny holds both a Bachelor of Education and an Associate Diploma in Performing Arts (Jazz). She is currently a member of the JazzWA committee, and is combining music education with her regular jazz performances.
