Left - Glenda Linscott
Shirley Valentine is returning to Brisbane (QUT Gardens Theatre, July 3-5), but this time popular actress Glenda Linscott is playing the sole/title role of the Liverpool housewife who gets a new lease on life.
Linscott is no stranger to the former ‘Shirley’ of the early 90’s, Amanda Muggleton, having both starred in the cult phenomenon TV drama of the 70s and 80s Prisoner - Linscott as tough bikie inmate Rita “The Beater” Connors.
With the exception of a recurring role in Murder Call, Linscott has been working consistently in theatre directorial roles, but says she relished the chance to go back on stage when offered the chance to play the beloved character of Shirley.
“It’s such a wonderful play with a fantastic character, I’m just so excited about taking Shirley to audiences,” she said.
Linscott also admitted that it’s both challenging and confronting being the only cast member.
“I have always been cautious about one person shows; I believe that they often don’t work, they aren’t dramatic enough,” she said.
“Shirley Valentine is a definite exception because audiences just fall in love with the character and her world, and they can see her being changed by her relationships.”
Written by Willy Russell of Educating Rita fame, Shirley Valentine is about a Liverpool housewife, who finds herself talking to the wall while her husband is out working. She feels that her life is terribly mundane as she compares scenes in her current life with what she used to be like and feels she has stagnated and is in a rut.
But everything changes when her best friend wins an all expenses paid vacation to Greece for two. Shirley grasps the opportunity to head for the sun, leave her current drudgery behind, rediscover herself, follow her dreams and get a new lease on life.
Presented by HIT Productions, Shirley Valentine is directed by Jennifer Hagan and produced by Christine Harris.
