“…Shrewd, fast and immensely funny…” New York Times
From the writer of Glengarry Glen Ross, Oleanna and American Buffalo comes a witty, caustic insight into the world of the Hollywood Executive.
When the biggest star in Hollywood wants to make your movie, just how far will you go to clinch the deal? A film producer faces the ultimate dilemma. His long time friend brings him the movie that will make him his fortune; and his new attractive secretary encourages him to make the spiritual movie that will save his soul. He only has one night to choose. In this tale of greed, desire, jealousy and power, everything he believes in will be put to the test.
David Mamet strips the tinsel from a town where artistic integrity is rarely questioned.
Speed-The-Plow focuses on the underbelly of show business with Mamet making use of his increasing knowledge of Hollywood to provide an insider’s look at the city emblematic of both success and corruption. He creates a “buddy-play” which argues for the values of personal loyalty and male friendship in a world whose emotional note is cynical hypocrisy.
Mel Cantwell who directed last year’s Equity Guild Award Best Production of Edward Albee’s The Goat, Or Who is Sylvia? will direct Perth Theatre Company’s second production at the Playhouse Theatre for 2008 with 2006 NIDA graduate Gemma Northover in her first role with the company as the seductive Karen and veteran actors Luke Hewitt (Face to Face and Milk & Honey) and Steve Turner (The Turning, Tango and Talk about the Passion) as the Hollywood power players.
Claude Marcos (Glorious!, Loveplay and The Goat, Or Who is Sylvia?) is set designer with Matthew Cheetham - also known as Cheeky (Glorious!) as sound designer and Andrew Lake as lighting designer.
