Manna is the second production of Wharf 2LOUD, five works programmed throughout 2008 by Sydney Theatre Company Artistic Directors Andrew Upton and Cate Blanchett with an aim to approach the making of theatre from different angles. Composer and sound designer Max Lyandvert collaborates with writer Dan Spielman, plus two visual artists and five performers to create an innovative performance driven by an aural theatre-scape. Manna is at STC’s Wharf 2 from 27 June to 12 July 2008.
Lyandvert describes Manna as “a concerto… a theatrical meditation on the core human condition of grief…and how through our conscious experience of grief, we define ourselves as human…” Set against arresting, vivid imagery, the methods employed to create all sounds in the piece are entirely visible to the audience, revealing some of the processes used to create theatrical illusion.
Andrew Upton and Cate Blanchett said: “Max and Dan’s collaboration is adventurous and surprising. For us in the audience, Manna and each of the Wharf 2LOUD shows this year, give truly different nights out and opportunities to re-imagine the vast possibilities of live theatre.”
Max Lyandvert is best known as a composer and sound designer. For STC, he has composed music and designed soundscapes for over 25 productions including Blackbird, The Vertical Hour, The Lost Echo and Riflemind. He has directed three plays by Richard Foreman and a number of other productions including Close Your Little Eyes for string quartet and children’s choir at Sydney Opera House for Sydney Festival.
Dan Spielman was a member of the STC Actors Company until 2007 with memorable performances in productions including The Season at Sarsaparilla, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Mother Courage. He is also well-known for his role as Dr Patrick Tidy in The Secret Life of Us and for his lead role in the film, One Perfect Day. He has completed a Churchill Fellowship focussing on translations of Rimbaud in Paris and exploration of European stage, radio, and poetry.
Forthcoming 2008 Wharf 2LOUD productions are Saturn’s Return by Tommy Murphy, directed by David Berthold (from 15 August), Highway Rock’n’Roll Disaster from Adelaide’s The Border Project (from 17 September) and Frankenstein created by Ralph Myers (from 28 November). The first Wharf 2LOUD show of 2008 was the critically acclaimed embrace: Guilt Frame by Tess de Quincey in February.
