THREE NIGHTS, THREE PLAYS, THREE WINNERS

Rehearsed readings of winning scripts from The R.E. Ross Trust Playwrights’ Script Development Awards at fortyfivedownstairs

A Black Joy, by Declan Greene
Wednesday 11 June, 7.30pm

If John Candy doesn’t stop eating, his feet will be amputated – but at 200 kilos he doesn’t do much walking anyway. While his legs atrophy, a woman discovers empowerment through bodybuilding; a teenage neo-Nazi finds true love; a politician slices up celebrities in his basement; and thousands of miles away, a plane crashes in the mountains and the survivors eat each other. A Black Joy ties seven characters together in a sickly cycle of pitch-black vignettes about survival, dependency and cannibalism in the 21st century.

Duets for Lovers and Dreamers, by Sandra Fiona Long

Thursday 12 June, 7.30pm

This series of six duets celebrates various stages of human life. A pre-pubescent girl struggles to make sense of her place in the world while clouds sweep overhead; old lovers reveal the life still within; a mother battles with her various ‘selves’; a man obsesses over a woman he briefly encounters in a bar; new lovers sing karaoke; and a young woman and her deceased grandmother reflect on life and the journey ahead. This work has been described as ‘wonderfully poetic … each story sensitively and imaginatively deals with an aspect of life, death and the human condition’.

Dispatch, by Penelope Bartlau

Friday 13 June, 7.30pm

From nothingness we come.
By nothingness we are sustained.
To nothingness we return.

Dispatch is about a puppet character, Sorrel, a girl who arrives in a leaky boat at ‘the middle place’, an island. The keeper of the island is Maman Brigitte, and on the island Sorrel finds abandoned suitcases. As she goes through these, seeking shelter and refuge, she finds stories and lessons in their contents.
