Brace yourselves this 11 - 12 July as the musically macabre Kransky Sisters tweak and twist contemporary chamber ensemble, Topology, in ways they’ve never been tweaked and twisted before.
When Topology needed a tuba player for their upcoming Brisbane Powerhouse concert, they invited The Kransky Sisters’ strangely reclusive sibling, Dawn Kransky, to play.
Dawn, who studied at Tafe Toowoomba, will take leave from her job as trolley librarian at the Esk hospital to play with the quintet. Dawn’s older sisters, Mourne and Eve, insist on driving her down from Esk in the Morris, resulting in a comically oddball new music venture.
Dawn has rarely performed in front of an audience, aside from the early years when her sisters would play together as children at the Esk Fair, while their mother sold, among other things, her tasty fudge. This time her two older sisters have come along to watch, bringing their cavalcade of home baked instruments, the musical saw, reed keyboard, kitchen pot, toilet brush and duelling tambourines, just in case something goes wrong, she will test not only her sisters’ patience but also Topology’s musical abilities without doubt.
The ever diverse Topology, are nothing if not flexible having collaborated with the likes of Kate Miller-Heidke, Tyrone Noonan (george) and composer-pianist legend Terry Riley but the Brisbane quintet are agog at the possibilities that abound with this new oddball musical adventure.
Topology bass player, Robert Davidson, said the group feel a kinship with the eccentric Kranskys due to their shared love of making irreverent, tortured versions of daggy pop classics. “Music and comedy are also closely related,” he said. “They’re both all about timing.”
The Kransky Sisters insist they merely enjoy playing what they hear on their old wireless at home. Mourne Kransky said she hopes Topology doesn't play anything untoward as that wouldn't be nice. “Dawn only plays the modest tunes. It will be nice to see all those musicians on the stage and Eve and I are packing the porridge in case we get hungry during the show. Modern music is a reflection of the modern times isn't it? The sound of the egg-beater has been replaced by the electric mixer, the simmer of the copper boiler has become the whir of the twin tub. Modern music is everywhere.”
The Kransky Sisters cover songs by Talking Heads, Mi-Sex, Michael Jackson and even Pink. The combination of their unique musical renditions, combined with somewhat strange behaviour, naiveté, and their droll comic dialogue, make for a highly entertaining brew. Add a pinch of Topology and you’ll be begging for second helpings.
Together this unlikely coupling turns the Powerhouse Theatre on its head not once, not twice but three times across two days. Don’t even think about missing this quirky but brilliant show.
