Families looking for a school holiday activity to suit all ages are about to be rewarded with The Arrival, an exquisite puppetry and digital animation show in Brisbane for one day only (QUT Gardens Theatre, Wednesday 2 July), on the tail end of a worldwind national tour.
This adaptation of multi-award winning illustrator/author Shaun Tan’s stunning book The Arrival is a truly warm and magical experience for all ages as it follows one man’s journey into an unknown world that is both beautiful and bewildering.
Shaun Tan’s delicately intricate illustrations of a world where animals and people live harmoniously in a fantastical metropolis come to life through a mix of digital projection, performance and puppetry excellence.
The Arrival transports audiences a new world that traverses themes of freedom, migration, survival, love and acceptance with enticing use of alien symbols, curious animals, and mysterious lights.
Winner of the Western Australian Equity Guild Award for ‘Best Production of 2006’, the absence of words in this show not only makes the story perfect for puppetry but emphasises the isolation that is experienced by many people arriving in a new place.
Adapted by Michael Barlow and directed by Philip Mitchell, the production is designed by the company’s Chief Puppet Maker, Jiri Zmitko and will combine digital projection of Tan’s exquisite imagery with live performance and puppetry.
The Arrival will be performed by highly regarded performers and puppeteers, Karen Hethey, Sanjiva Margio and Giri Mazzella.
“The Arrival is simply exquisite theatre.” - THE WEST AUSTRALIAN
“... a soulful and richly imaginative show of refreshing excellence...This is exquisite storytelling unfolding at a child’s pace as if turning the pages of Shaun Tan’s award winning book.” - THE AUSTRALIAN
