The 'locked room' murder is a favourite device of the mystery genre as it not only asks "Whodunnit" but "how did they do it"? Traditionally, the only person in the locked room is the murder victim and they usually remain quite dead. But what would happen if the two detectives assigned to solve the case were locked in the room as well? And the murder victim was not dead but alive?
This is the premise of Blak Yak Theatre's upcoming show Deus Ex Quanta, written by E. F. Doucette. It is a humorous, extremely clever play which tells the story of two detectives who, bereft of clues, discover that the only way to solve the murder is to develop an understanding of quantum physics, chaos theory, deductive reasoning, religion, and the very nature of reality itself. Oh. and cats.
"The first time I read Deus Ex Quanta, I was struck with the quality of the script. E. F. Doucette has written a wonderful play with incredibly intelligent and thought provoking content which fits seamlessly into the fractured narrative of what, essentially, is a very funny comedy", says director Nick Donald.
The cast are experienced, talented performers who are delighted to have been given the opportunity to flex their acting muscles with such a challenging play. Scott Northover, who plays the role of John Doe, recently won the 2007 Finley Award for Best Supporting Male for his work in Black Books. Kristen Berry, playing the role of Detective Chapple, was part of the award winning cast of Picasso's Women. And Alex Jones, who plays Detective White, has recently returned to Perth after a long stint in London and is looking forward to his return to the WA stage.
Blak Yak theatre started in 1993 with one very simple premise - no drawing room comedies. Since then, the company has earned a reputation for staging high quality productions that are just a little bit different. The emphasis has always been on finding new or different scripts, the majority of which have never been performed in Perth. This philosophy has paid off with Blak Yak having won numerous awards, more often than not in recognition of the challenge undertaken and the quality of the end product.
