The Real Thring | Hoy Polloy Print
Hoy Polloy and Triple R present the world premiere of The Real Thring written by Barry Dickins and directed by Wayne Pearn, at the Triple R Performance Space, Brunswick East from 12 – 27 September 2008.

Frank Thring was a famous actor, feared drunkard and missed enigma; and the most flamboyant, eccentric, intimidating, often cruelly sarcastic iconoclast Australia had ever seen.

It is not that long ago that Thring entertained cinema, television and theatre audiences, but his earthly gold lamé has faded and dimmed; until now, where The Real Thring searches and discovers his soul and spirit.

The Real Thring portrays Thring as beautiful, confused, taking delight in shocking audiences and drinking like there was no tomorrow.

Playwright, Barry Dickins explains that, “The Real Thring is the latest tender and solicitous tribute to fallen and bruised Australian performers, written to lend them poise and elegance after having been, as it were, dropped.”

“If sadness can be hilarious, this is for you ... If loneliness can be triumphant, you need this manuscript.

“There is a great guffaw in being crucified and great hope in being healed through the theatre ... The Real Thring is a play of faith for all who truly love those who have buoyed us,” Dickins remarked.

Dickins charts Thring’s journey from Toorak to the West End then to Hollywood and finally to Mahoney Street Fitzroy, where clad in his theatrical black he often found safe harbour in the studios of Triple R.

Wayne Pearn, director of The Real Thring and Hoy Polloy Artistic Director said, “Through Dickins’ poetic language we are reminded of the outrageous outer Frank, but more importantly we discover the reflective inner Thring.”

“A Reservoir boy writing about a Toorak boy to be performed at Melbourne’s alternative institution ... frankly, Thring would have thought the irony delicious!” Pearn highlighted.

Michael F Cahill features as Frank Thring in the world premiere of The Real Thring.

Cahill received critical acclaim in Hoy Polloy’s previous production, the Australian premiere of How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found; and has worked with La Mama (The True Amazon Adventures Of Roger Casement) and Theatre In Decay (The Taking Of Ramsey Street).
