MACE FRANCIS ORCHESTRA
Big Band Sounds Swing Into Town
“An inspiring performance …an absorbing, exciting and very entertaining evening.” Alan Corbet - JazzWA.
"Mace Francis deserves recognition as a big band leader with his own
vision and his own sound." Bill Donaldson - Cadence Magazine
There is nothing quite like the excitement and impact of a big band –
the exhilarating experience of being in a room with, in this case, 14
top notch musicians all playing at their best. Audiences across
Australia will get the rare chance to experience that delight first
hand when the Mace Francis Orchestra tours in June and July.
MFO was formed in 2004 by band-leader and composer Mace Francis to
experiment with composition in the style of the great modern big bands
lead by Bob Brookmeyer, Thad Jones and Maria Schneider. The result has
been the coming together of 14 of Perth’s finest young musicians and
composers to create new music for big band.
“We are all very excited to be taking our music and the big band
experience into venues across Australia. It’s always a thrill to play
to new audiences. It’s a big tour and we’ve got a great big bus to
prove it - lucky we all like each other!”, says Mace of the touring
party.
In a very short time MFO has developed an individual and original sound
through regular performances and special projects including the highly
acclaimed Chinese Whispers series, based on a musical composition game
created by Francis whereby each musician composes 10 bars of music
before passing it on to the next composer. Other projects include a
commission by the Perth Jazz Society (The Unpopular Songbook) and a
collaboration with Aboriginal singers from the band Djiva.
As well as performing as a group with jazz legend Jim Pugh and being
nomimated in 2008 for the West Australian WAMi Jazz Group of the Year,
many individual MFO members have also enjoyed musical success and
acclaim. Mace himself was recognised with a 2007 award for Most
Outstanding Individual Contribution to Jazz, and is currently Musical
Director of the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra and a lecturer at The Western
Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
In 2006 MFO released their first studio CD, titled Introducing the Mace
Francis Orchestra. They also released the limited edition album MFO
Live featuring performances from their 2006 tour around Victoria
including their Wangaratta Jazz Festival appearance.
