Mahler’s Sixth was unprecedented. Ferocious and tragic with moments of serene beauty punctuated by the hammer-blows of fate, this symphony moves through realms of feeling that only music can reach. Although misunderstood and derided during his life, Mahler felt that his time would come, and indeed he has become a ‘spiritual prophet’ for our age; his voice, here bleakly fatalistic and heartrending, has never been so relevant.
