New Vietnamese-Australian Play Silence debuts at La Mama Theatre Written by award winning author and psychologist Hoa Pham and directed by Gorkem Acaroglu (The Habib Show, Haneef: The Interrogation).
Psychological and psychic forces operate in the lives of three generations of Vietnamese-Australian women. Hungry ghosts feature in the play, the spirits of the deceased who have unresolved business with the living.
The play focuses on the silence, secrets and spirits held within the heart and history.
Silence is based on the real life stories of Vietnamese Australian women interviewed by Hoa Pham.
Silence is performed by HaiHa Le, Ai Diem Le and Mong Diep and is the latest production by the Australian Vietnamese Youth Media.
Hoa Pham says:
“This play enabled me to explore the differences between generations of Vietnamese women and what unites them. The stories I was privileged to hear were amazing from my Australian born second generation point of view. There is more to the Vietnamese than media perceptions of boat people, drugs or high academic achievement.”
Acclaimed director, Gorkem Acaroglu comments:
“Silence is a play about women with the unique experience of being new Australians. It is written with warmth and poetic vigour and is a refreshing expression of characters rarely seen on the Australian stage.”
