The Russian authorities were uneasy when poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko published his poem Babi Yar in 1961, for it spoke of the murder of more than 100,000 Jewish men, women and children by the invading Nazis and their local collaborators in a ravine known as Babi Yar in the Ukraine, between 1941 and 1943. When the Soviet government learned that Shostakovich was making the poem part of his new symphony, wariness turned to censorship: Yevtushenko’s denouncement of the perceived residual Russian anti-Semitism led to attempts to cancel the work’s premiere. The Symphony – at once tragic, mordantly funny, ironic and powerfully direct in its impact – is another compelling masterwork by the ultimate Soviet composer.
