During his years in New York, Dvořák created his symphony From the New World, the first major concert work still performed widely today which audiences believe “sounds American.” Yet we can hear his homesickness for his native Bohemia in the haunting slow movement of this ever popular work.
Plato’s Symposium, the ancient dialogue between guests at an imaginary Greek banquet, was a favourite text of Leonard Bernstein’s; from it he created one of the rare works of music inspired by philosophy, in this case a discussion in praise of love. The spirit of jazz hovers over much of this beautiful and imaginative Serenade for Violin and Orchestra.
One of the rising stars of the violin, Canadian-born James Ehnes, makes his first MSO appearances in these concerts.
