The sky is falling!…literally. An asteroid is hurtling through space and planet earth is in free fall. Six individuals thrown together find out what they are really made of. Anarchy reigns outside whilst inside, behind closed doors, small acts of selflessness battle against small-minded betrayals. Can love still exist in the face of looming obliteration? Is there time for hope?
Rio Saki & Other Falling Debris was selected from over 70 plays as the best play read at Parnassus' Den in 2006. Sydney’s equivalent to Melbourne’s iconic La Mama Theatre, Parnassus’ Den was founded in 1994 to encourage and develop new Australian writing. Rio Saki & Other Falling Debris is hard, sharp, muscular theatre. Hilariously tragic, it is grand guignol for the twenty-first century.
Playwright Shaun Charles’ recent plays include Three Points of Contact (Winner 2004 Tom James Award) and an adaptation of the Andrew McGahan novel Last Drinks produced at La Boite Theatre last year. He is currently writing a libretto for a new Australian opera, Dirty Apple, that will premiere in Queensland in 2009. Charles also writes regularly for The Australian and The Courier Mail.
Director Dave Letch has worked across film, television and theatre for thirty-five years. His recent theatre credits include A Tree Falling by Ron Elisha (nominated for a Green Room Award), Solitary Animals by Elaine Acworth and the critically acclaimed new work by Ron Elisha Wrongful Life. He has just completed shooting the feature film WISHBONE. Letch is a regular director for Parnassus’ Den.
About Rio Saki & Other Falling Debris, Letch says: “Rio Saki is a work of formidable energy with little time for despair. It is an elegy to love, loves lost, and love found possibly too late. It is a desperate clutch at a straw, any straw and consequently at times anarchically funny as people have the last chance to become who they are or maybe have always wished to be. “
