The Devil’s Dictionary Print
AMBITIOUS barrister Morgan Mitchell has been paid an enormous
amount of money for a case and the accused has skipped bail.
With so much on his mind Morgan is losing his grip on his marriage to the spendthrift Bambi who is having a crisis of her own. Enter Dante, a suave European painter and lover of Michelle, Bambi’s best friend. It is Michelle who tells this modern Melbourne fable about the top end of town largely through her own version of The Devil’s Dictionary.

Last year La Mama, Carlton conducted their annual First Time
Playwrights’ competition; where three directors each chose one play to be read at a public performance by professional actors at The Courthouse Theatre. Acclaimed director Görkem Acaroglu chose The Devil’s Dictionary written by Helen Heritage. This performance season at fortyfivedownstairs has developed from the reading into a wholly realised production.

Görkem Acaroglu is a director, writer and dramaturge. Her directorial credits include The Epiphany of Ben Hall by Barry Dickens, The Habib Show by Gorkem Acaroglu, Fool for Love by Sam Shepherd, Haneef: The Interrogation by Graham Pitts and The Pain and The Itch by Bruce Norris for Red Stitch Actors Theatre.
Helen Heritage has published a collection of short stories The Messenger and her work has appeared in Meanjin, Westerly and Antipodes. She was a founding editor of the literary journal fine line and taught creative writing at CAE for many years. The Devil’s Dictionary is her first play.
