Monday 19 May - Bennelong - a play by Jeremy Johnson
Bennelong is the second play of Jeremy Johnson’s two part theatre work titled: The Virtuoso. An Aboriginal painter, Matilda Jabiluka, whose work has recently been gifted to a private gentleman’s club in Sydney, is mistakenly ejected from the club just before businessman, Lister Hopper’s 65th birthday celebrations are about to get underway. The media pitches camp on the street outside threatening to expose this bastion of patrician conservatism as a racist anachronism from a bygone era in need of extermination. The inner lives of the members and their guests unravel as outside threats from political correctness rattle at the sandstone fortress of privilege and blue ribbon elitism that underscores not just the fears of the Anglo establishment but every Caucasian calling themselves Australian.
