Richard Feynman (Henri Szeps) plays the bongos, performs in amateur dramatics, frequents topless bars and wins Nobel Prizes. In fact, Feynman is one of the twentieth century’s great physicists and seems to have everything going for him. As any good scientist knows, however, nothing is ever quite as it seems.
Set in Feynman’s ramshackle office on a Saturday afternoon in 1986 as he prepares for a lecture, he fields unending phone calls, deals with some visiting Russians and Miriam Field (Ivy Mak) one very persistent, and attractive student. QED is a funny, elegant play about the very essence of living – the need to know.
During his career, Richard Feynman assisted in the development of the atomic bomb, expanded the understanding of quantum electrodynamics (QED), translated Mayan hieroglyphics and cut to the heart of the Challenger disaster.
Director Andrew Doyle writes, “Henri Szeps is ideally cast as Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman, as Henri himself has a background in electrical engineering, a genuine passion for science and wonderful comic timing. Last seen on the Ensemble stage with Garry McDonald in Halpern & Johnson late last year, Szeps is a favourite amongst Ensemble audiences and he teams here with recent Ensemble Studios graduate, Ivy Mak.”
‘QED is a seductive mix of science, human affections, moral courage and comic eccentricity. An evening not to be missed.’ New York Magazine
‘Feynman was an iconoclast and a free thinker, at the mercy of a constantly curious, questing mind.’ NY Theatre
‘Who knew that quantum electrodynamics could be so much fun?’ The New York Post
