Critically acclaimed Terrain premiered at the Wellington Fringe Festival in 2004 winning the ‘Best Production’ award and has toured at a number of NZ arts festivals since with two sell-out seasons at the Nelson Arts Festival. Terrain explores humanity, scale and landscape through a unique blend of dance, physical theatre, puppetry and music on record-player vinyl.
Conceived, choreographed and performed by Malia Johnston and Guy Ryan, Terrain is an intimate experience for both audience and dancers with audiences of only 32 at a time seated around a small, raised stage. Malia says, ‘What Guy and I were looking at in Terrain was how to choreograph an audience into the performance, to create an experience they could have with us’.
Dancing a lyrical duet, Johnston and Ryan balance on yoga blocks and use objects including tiny toys and a model train, to create their own Lilliputian universe.
