Award-winning theatre and screen composer Andrée Greenwell and her chamber-pop band, The Villianelles will perform an eclectic collection of songs at Performance Space at CarriageWorks over two nights on Thursday May 22 and Friday May 23, as part of the Sydney Writers’ Festival.
Cabaret-folk electronica with a splash of the operatic, Andree Greenwell has taken the razor sharp words of Australian poets, Jordie Albiston, Alison Croggan and Kathleen Mary Fallon and collaborated with some of Sydney’s most outstanding and versatile musicians from noise-art, classical, indie-pop, impro and crossover music scenes.
Andrée Greenwell has worked extensively as a composer and performer across mainstream and experimental platforms within the Australian performing arts, as well as film and television. Most recently she completed a score for the Bell Shakespeare/Malthouse of Venus and Adonis starring Melissa Madden Gray and Susan Prior, currently playing in Melbourne. In 2003, Greenwell’s new music-theatre work, DREAMING TRANSPORTATION: Voice Portraits of the First Women of White Settlement at Port Jackson premiered at Sydney Festival 2003. An ABC recording of the work was awarded the Prix Marulic 2004 and “Dreaming Transportation” was awarded best classical song, Musicoz Awards, 2003. Andree has worked with Sydney Theatre Company, collaborated with Jimmy Little and Paul Capsis been nominated for a Helpmann for her score to STC’s Volpone and in 2002, she resident composer at Chateau de La Napoule.
