Girls on Boys Print
Girls on Boys:  a Gulsen Ozer Collection is a season curated by Gulsen Ozer that will see new work from five female choreographers created for and performed by five male dancers at Dancehouse from 28 May to 1 June 2008.

Experienced and emerging choreographers from diverse backgrounds and performance styles have been chosen and paired with individual dancers, selected by Ozer.

Dianne Heywood-Smith will create a work for dancer David Backler; Dani-Ela Kayler will create a work for dancer Lee Serle; Jo Lloyd will create a work for dancer Adam Wheeler; Dianne Reid will create a work for dancer Luke Hickmott; and Yumi Umiumare will create a work for dancer Gerard Veltre.

Ozer has paired each choreographer with one male dancer and the choreographers and dancers have just now come together to create the new work.  The length of each work is ten minutes.

In some instance, the choreographers have not worked with the dancers before, and this has been a deliberate ploy by Ozer to bring a new dialogue between the two so that they create interesting and positively challenging work.

Ozer will work with composer Wendy Morrison to create a score for the entire performance. Ozer and Morrison will work independently from the choreographers and the score will only be revealed to the choreographer and dancers on the eve before opening night, instead of it being created alongside the works.  This device will introduce an element of risk and provide audiences with a juxtaposition of movement and music.

Similarly, Ozer will work with one lighting designer for an overall lighting design for the entire performance.

'My vision for Girls on Boys is to create a diverse program which encourages new collaborations and (that) cut involves taking risks.  The program title is intentionally provocative marking an old primary schoolyard term for dividing into teams to play a game i.e. “Boys on girls” or “Girls on boys”. And here in this season, the girls will be on ‘team creators’ and the boys will be on ‘team presenters,’ says Gulsen Ozer.

Girls on Boys will be performed in the round in a tiered amphitheatre style setting.
