Pilobolus Print
What is Pilobolus? The official definition is a sun-loving fungus that lives in cow dung. But Pilobolus is also the name of a dance company that has mixed inventiveness with humour and thrived for more than 30 years.

Pilobolus the arts organism, germinated in the fertile soil of a Dartmouth College dance class in 1971 by students Michael Tracy, Jonathan Wolken and Robby Barnett. What emerged was a collaborative choreographic process and a unique weight-sharing approach to partnering that gave the young company a non-traditional but powerful new set of skills to create dance works . The group was immediately acclaimed for its startling mix of humour and invention and Pilobolus soon became a self-sufficient organisation, its members choreographing, dancing, managing, and publicising their own programs.  They've broken all the rules, with great success, ever since.

Pilobolus' signature is the entangling of bodies. They employ the laws of physics to come up with something that seems impossible. They create movement that is hard, and hard to categorise.

The company's innovative exploration of modern dance has given rise to a unique style where dancers transform their bodies into wondrous shapes.

Pilobolus has travelled the globe and performed on Oprah and the Academy Awards and in three Olympic Games. They have a repertoire of 100 original works, with styles ranging from playful to intense to gravity-defying and, in their only Australian performances, they will be performing a selection from their repertoire including:

 AQUATICA
A girl on a beach. A conch. The waves roll in and suck her down into the deep. Frightening, mysterious and ultimately playful, the world of Aquatica is a breathtaking meditation set in the oceanic underworld. A fairy-tale using images of exotic marine life to probe the depths of the human psyche.  Full of breathtaking leaps and amazing forms, Aquatica is a brand new work and classic Pilobolus.

PSEUDOPODIA
A tumbling tumbleweed solo set to an all-percussion score.

GNOMEN
This is one of Pilobolus' classic men's quartets. Gnomen's lyrical exploration of relationships emerges from an unusually inventive physical vocabulary and is dedicated to the memory of the company's friend and colleague, Jim Blanc.

SYMBIOSIS
A male-female duet which traces the birth of a relationship between two creatures sinuously and sensuously intertwined. A Darwinian investigation and a love story, Symbiosis never ceases to surprise with its majesty and emotional depth.

DAY TWO
One of Pilobolus' classic works, Day Two's tribal atmosphere enacts the second day of the creation of the world, from its earliest forms of life to the moment at which creatures of the earth take flight into the air.  One of the company's most amazing works, set to a soundtrack from Brian Eno and Talking Heads, Day Two captures the awe of evolution and the wonder of existence.
