The intimate spaces of the Incinerator Arts Complex inspired the first Quiet Music Festival in 2007; an event small in scale that was a huge success. The QMF returns in 2008 and will again fill every nook and cranny of this unique performance space with an extraordinary array of musical sights and sounds.
A chilled out afternoon of performances from an eclectic line up featuring some of Australia’s finest musicians, site specific installations, and workshops by two of our feature artists, takes place in the relaxed ambience of the Incinerator that creates the perfect setting where audiences can sit back, settle in and listen to the many aural delights on offer.
Highlights include:
Coco’s Lunch needs no introduction...the ARIA award winning group described as a “...national living treasure...” Herald Sun, will be a highlight of the day “exquisite harmonies - one of Coco’s trademarks.” The Age
Linsey Pollak is renowned for making music from carrots, rubber gloves, chairs and even blow-up frogs. In his latest show, Cycology, he applies this talent to the ordinary bicycle. In this brilliant solo show, the bicycle seat, handlebar, gear cable, bicycle pump, wheels and frame all become musical instruments. Their sounds are recorded live, mixed and layered as you watch so as to create wondrous compositions. “ one of Australia’s most brilliant and underrated musicians” Courier Mail.
Fresh from the recent recording of their debut album Four Elements the Melbourne Guitar Quartet will be exploring themes of intimacy with engaging, private performances. These are touching, personal, performances that are not to be missed.
Cellodiva (aka Sally Maer) is truly one of Australia’s most sought after performers. From Bach to Bon Jovi, Cellodiva performances encompass a diversity of exquisite music, stories and chat. In her career she has performed with Kanye West; the Sydney Symphony Orchestra; the band for Australian Idol, the Peter Sculthorpe Quartet at the Gallipolli dawn service, Delta Goodrem and Tommy Lee’s Rockstar Supernova. You get the idea.
The trio of Louie Prez is Doug DeVries, Leo Dale and Ray Pereira three of Melbourne’s premier musicians. Doug DeVries’ Brazilian jazz grooves combined with Ray Pereira’s African, Cuban rhythms and Leo Dale’s cool alto sax and flashy suits will lift spirits, make toes tap and hearts sing.
Herb Patten is Australia's leading Aboriginal gumleaf player. First recognised as a serious gumleaf player when he was 7 years old, Herb has been performing for over 30 years. He is an intuitive player who at first played completely by ear. His repertoire spans traditional pop classics and folk music. For the last five years he has given classes on gumleaf playing for the Music Department of Monash University, Victoria and was introduced to a national audience via the talent show Australia’s Got Talent.
Valanga Khoza is a superb musician and story teller whose performances stay with audiences long after the show has finished. Valanga charms his audiences with humour and wit, telling stories of his life growing up in South Africa and his travels across the world as a refugee. These stories are embellished by beautiful music from many traditional instruments such as the kalimba, marimba and shijororo (jaw harp) as well as irresistible rhythms from the guitar, percussion and Valanga's velvety voice.
PLUS .....
Ernie Althoff creates two site specific works that use materials that are low budget, recycled and re-appropriated. Pen and Ink will be performed inside a shipping container which becomes part of the performance;
Sound artist Myles Mumford creates a moment of seclusion and reflection to comfort and caress;
James Hullick’s extraordinary installation of suspended automated violins, complete with mechanised bowing, will magnify the quiet; and
Glass Percussion Project, a Festival highlight last year, returns with percussionist Eugene Ughetti creating other-worldly sounds from glass artist Elaine Miles’ exquisite hand blown instruments.
“Last year a capacity crowd enjoyed an afternoon of unique musical experiences. The Quiet Music Festival is about the type of music featured but it is also about how audiences listen and respond to the performance. The Incinerator’s spaces provide audiences with the opportunity to be up close to the artists and hear the music in its purest form,” Leo Dale, co-programmer Quiet Music Festival.
