Bedside Manners | Beaumaris Theatre Inc Print
Beaumaris Theatre Inc. announces its fourth annual Anonymous Theatre production, Bedside Manners to be performed on Saturday June 28, 2008. Beaumaris is the only theatre company in Australia that performs Anonymous Theatre.

What is Anonymous Theatre? Here’s how the inventors (The Anonymous Theatre Co – Portland, Oregon) describe it:

“A play is selected. Auditions are held. The play is cast... secretly. The identity of the cast is kept secret from everyone... even from the cast itself. The actors rehearse one-on-one with the director. Then, on the night of the performance, the cast enters the theatre as if they are members of the audience. The house lights dim and the play begins, with each actor delivering his or her first line from the audience. All the cast members discover one another's identity for the first time on stage, in front of a live audience. In 2002, Darius Pierce, Sam Kusnetz, Kerry Ryan, and Rebecca Lowe conceived a crazy theatrical experiment that they named Anonymous Theatre. They knew it could fail miserably, but that it would at least be an exhilarating way to spend an evening.”

Darius Pierce directed the third anonymous production “Death Trap” at Beaumaris in 2007. This year’s director, Brian Uniacke, played the lead role in the 2007 production and has experienced both sides of this style of theatre:

“It’s true, directing is probably less nerve wracking than acting in Anonymous format. It’s more fun being the director and putting the actors through situations knowing how it’s all going to come together on the night and the cast get to experience it for the first time as the audience does.”

Bedside Manners was written by famous UK TV actor Derek Benfield. The story centres around Ferris who has agreed to look after his sister’s country B&B while she goes on a holiday. He is green but thinks the task will be easy. WRONG! One couple arrive to consummate an extra-marital affair. Another couple arrive to do the same but Ferris finds himself in the middle of it when he discovers the second couple are the respective spouses of the first couple. This is a classic English bedroom farce.
