Ravel once described his Bolero as “one long, very gradual crescendo.” Commissioned by dancer Ida Rubinstein for her ballet troupe, the scenario she created for it was simple but sensational: gradually a café fills up with revellers until the stage is bursting with frenetically dancing bodies. Bolero’s sinuous melody and hypnotic rhythm have made it immensely popular; in fact, it is probably the most frequently played orchestral work of all.
Brooding, intense yet sublimely graceful, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 was long his most admired work for piano and orchestra, and has much of the dark grandeur associated with the music for his opera Don Giovanni.
The concert opens with Berlioz’ evocative picture of a storm at sea.
