Australia’s foremost composer, Peter Sculthorpe wrote his Sonata for Viola and Percussion work while in England in 1960 and his yearning for his homeland is palpable in almost every bar.
In 1917, excited at the prospect of what the Russian Revolution would bring, Stravinksy made plans to go back to his homeland. But circumstances led him to remain in exile: his sense of homesickness pervades the suite from his theatrical fable The Soldier’s Tale. The piece is based on a Russian folk story, of a solider returning from the wars who meets the devil. They make a trade: the devil’s magic book, capable of answering any question, in return for the soldier’s violin. It turns out not to be a good bargain.
