On May 3, in a rare QPAC Concert Hall experience, the classical guitar will take centre stage as Brisbane’s Karin Schaupp, whose radiant platform presence is as admired as much as her exquisite artistry, returns home in triumph to perform Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s luminous Guitar Concerto. It will be Schaupp’s final performance before she takes leave for another of her passions, being a first time mum.
Completing the orchestral offer is Japanese Maestro and Seiji Ozawa pupil, Ryusuki Numajiri, a conductor renowned for his podium panache. He will direct the adrenalin rush of two famously vibrant and irrepressibly rhythmic scores, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol and Stravinsky’s landmark ballet, Petrouchka and the world premiere of Brian Howard’s Earthshine.
“In an age when the guitar is synonymous with rock ‘n’ roll, this concert event will see an exceptional artist command the stage in what promises to be a truly inspiring performance, one where she will bring to life Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s neo-classical Guitar Concerto,” said The Queensland Orchestra’s Tom Woods. “Karin shows that the acoustic guitar has the capacity to have a very vocal, intimate and lyrical quality. The poetic intensity and sense of elation in her playing are truly quite special.”
Schaupp is acknowledged as one of the world’s finest classical guitarists. She performs widely on the international stage as a recitalist, concerto soloist and festival guest, and has given recitals in Australia, Europe, Asia, the US, Mexico and Canada. Her unique stage presence and magical, passionate playing have inspired several composers to write works especially for her. Taught almost exclusively by her guitarist mother, Isolde Schaupp, Karin completed her tertiary music studies at The University of Queensland with First Class Honours, a Masters degree and was the recipient of a University Gold Medal. Most recently she was awarded the prestigious Music Council of Australia Freedman Fellowship in recognition of her achievements. She has released five highly acclaimed solo albums and is a founding member of the ARIA-award winning Saffire, The Australian Guitar Quartet.
After being catapulted to the fore of attention in the classical music world by winning the 40th Besançon International Conducting Competition in 1990, Ryusuke Numajiri now holds the positions of Principal Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and Chief Conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic, of which he was Principal Guest Conductor since 2001.
