A wicked spoof of the self-help industry, appearing at The Butterfly Club from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 June at 9.00 pm (8.00 pm Sun)
Be prepared to have your heart healed as Dr Mandi leads you through her 9 Easy Steps to Romantic Bliss. Utilising the power of alcohol, laughter and song, Dr Mandi’s insightful 9 step plan is a simple, fun and easy-to-follow mantra for even the most despairingly dysfunctional romantics!
Written and performed by Brisbane performer Jo Loth, the show features ‘stunning jazz originals’ (Time Off) with stand-up comedy, theatre and multi-media. Jo trained in Brisbane and France and is a singer / songwriter, actor and director.
Jo says the show plays on the sometimes fickle nature of the self-help industry through an exploration of the highs and lows of relationships. “The show moves from bittersweet to the downright silly as it sends up our search for the ‘perfect relationship’.”
“Dr Mandi is the new age guru who just can’t seem to be enlightened … no matter how hard she tries,” she says. “The audience become participants in one of her crazed self-help seminars, and gain insights into Dr Mandi’s own relationship issues.”
Directed by Bernadette Pryde, the show features piano accompaniment by Philippe Klaus, a media design by Freddy Komp and Adam Couper in the role of ‘the stage manager’ ‘Harvey’.
Jo is a singer / songwriter, actor, and director. She began her career in physical theatre performing with Frank Theatre throughout Australia and Japan. She then co-founded fringe company theatre ACTIV8 and devised and performed in two dark cabaret shows ‘Black Christmas’ (2003) and ‘House Broken Hearts’ (2004). In 2004, Jo was awarded the Lord Mayor’s Performing Arts Fellowship to study acting and voice with Pantheatre in France, and in 2006 she recorded her first EP ‘Slow, secret smile’ featuring her original jazz tunes. Her show 9 Easy Steps to Romantic Bliss appeared at the Brisbane Cabaret Festival in 2007.
