“…in search of a dynamic, energised text-based physical theatre.”
Tanya Gerstle, Creative Director OpticNerve Performance Group

OpticNerve Performance Group is a performance company committed to theatrical research; the investigation of performance-making processes and the re-visioning of non theatrical text.  Established by Tanya Gerstle, Creative Director, in 2006 with a creative development for Yes and followed by a work-in-progress of Yes in November 2007, this inaugural performance season of Yes and Five Kinds of Silence (May 29th – July 6th at fortyfivedownstairs in Melbourne) marks the collaboration with Darren Natale as OpticNerve’s Creative Producer and firmly launches the company into the Melbourne theatre scene.

The first of this exciting season of work is YES (May 29th – June 8th), based on a film by Sally Potter (Orlando, The Man Who Cried and The Tango Lesson).  It is a tale of a cross-cultural love affair where East meets West and erotically charged desire meets politics and faith.

“It’s as if Ingmar Bergman, William Shakespeare and Dr Seuss had collaborated on an anti-war project.” Dessan Thomson, Washington Post.

“It’s a work that is intensely emotional, politically relevant and psychologically astute”.
Torn Brook, “Talking Movies,” BBC World

Tanya Gerstle has transported this filmic odyssey to the stage with a radical re-vision of its original context. Bodies collide in an erotic dance of lust and violence and in haunting visuals, memory and experience manifest a dreamily surreal timelessness, as the driving energy to understand ‘the other’ propels these lovers to go ‘to war’. Uttering YES in the face of violence, suffering and disappointment is the only choice. It is an act of redemption.

Tanya Gerstle is a performance maker and director who has worked in Europe and Australia for over 25 years and has been a Lecturer in Acting at the VCA since 1999.  “At the heart of my work is the exploration of the boundary that lies between performance-making and the directing of acting. I am in search of a dynamic, energised text-based physical theatre,” said Creative Director Gerstle.
