Ollie and the Minotaur | 9minds Print
Receiving a five-star review in its Adelaide debut season, a new Australian play which premiered as an Arts Centre reading by Melbourne theatre company 9minds, will return to Melbourne in April with Adelaide theatre company floogle, in association with 9minds.

Written by talented young playwright Duncan Graham, recent winner of the Jill Blewett Playwright’s Award, Ollie and the Minotaur tells the story of three twenty something women, exploring the complexities and tensions within their friendships. What begins with fun and reminiscence on an annual summer holiday ends in a brutal examination of innocence, betrayal and truth in shared history.

Awarded an OSCART for Best Emerging Company of 2007, floogle has enjoyed enormous success in their home state of South Australia with critically acclaimed productions including The Splendid Sideshow Extravaganza of J. J. Beckett (Most Innovative Show 2002, Sunday Mail, Adelaide), One Long Night in the Land of Nod (Best New Play 2005, the Advertiser and Sunday Mail, Adelaide) and Black Crow Lullabies, (BANK SA Support Act Award for Best Original Work 2006).

In her five-star review, Louise Nunn of The Adelaide Advertiser described Ollie and the Minotaur as “confronting new Australian theatre”, delivered with “devastating and often hilarious precision”.

Emerging new work company 9minds agrees, choosing the play as one its readings of new Australian works at the Arts Centre, 9minds9works (2007).

9minds co-director Daniel Goodfellow observed “Ollie and the Minotaur grasps hold of you, taking you on a powerful journey. It’s naturalism at its best, written in a distinctive Australian voice.”

Ollie and the Minotaur features Adelaide actors Adriana Bonaccurso, Wendy Bos and Sarah Brokensha, and is directed by Sarah John, co-founder of floogle. Wendy Bos won the OSCART for Best Supporting Actress 2007, the Horatio for Best Female Actor 2007 and was nominated for a Critics’ Circle Award 2007 for her work with floogle.

Bianca Weiler of DB Magazine notes: “The acting is outstanding.  The audience feel like intruders eavesdropping on personal conversations performed in such a seemingly improvised, natural fashion.”

9minds recently produced a second play from its 2007 reading season, Kill the Wolf, at the Arts Centre, BlackBox, to rave reviews.  They will follow up Ollie and the Minotaur with a new season of readings from July featuring playwrights Ross Mueller, Lally Katz, Kit Lazaroo, Anthony Crowley, Alex Broun, Noëlle Janaczewska, Gareth Ellis, Jane Harrison and Kevin McGrath.
