And When He Falls Print
‘The bloody Plantagenet Kings of England are resurrected in remarkable collaboration’

And When He Falls is a performance piece, compiled and presented by leading actor John Stanton with original musical commentary written and played by pianist Tony Gould. Directed by Jill Forster.

This fantastic collaboration between Stanton and Gould is a treat for Melbourne theatre goers. Through dramatic selections from Marlowe and Shakespeare, the piece presents a dramatic short history of the Plantagenet Kings’ long-lived dynasty from Henry ll to Richard lll, leading on to Henry Vlll.

The title ‘And When He Falls’, taken from a speech by Cardinal Wolsey in Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, is a reference to the transitory nature of power, a constant theme in the bloody and fascinating period of the Plantagenet Kings, which still applies today.

In hosting this work, fortyfivedownstairs is enabling established artists like Stanton and Gould to pursue their own passions; bringing new work not considered by large companies to a new audience in a supportive testing ground.

Selection of excerpts, all from Shakespeare:

This precious stone, set in the silver sea, Which serves it in the office of a wall, Or as a moat defensive to a house, against
the envy of less happier lands, This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England
. Richard II

How many thousands of my poorer subjects Are at this hour asleep! O sleep, O gentle sleep, Nature's soft nurse, how have I
frighted thee, That thou no more will weigh my eyelids down
. Henry IV (part 2)

There is betwixt that smile we would aspire to
That sweet aspect of princes and their ruin,
More pangs and fears than wars or women have
And when he falls, he falls like Lucifer,
Never to hope again.
Henry VIII
