For his Australian Chamber Orchestra debut Finnish violinist/conductor John Storgårds, who has gained an international reputation as a champion of new and rarely heard works, will guest direct the ACO in an innovative program that catapults across the globe – with music from Finland, Lithuania, Poland and Japan.
Renowned for the ‘raw, incendiary power’ of his playing, John Storgårds is currently Chief Conductor of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra; Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland. He will introduce audiences to a range of contemporary music – gripping, strange, unearthly and unpredictable but never dull.
Lithuanian composer Jurgis Juozapaitis uses orchestral colours and timbres to great effect in his racy Perpetuum Mobile, while Eero Hämeenniemi’s jazz-inspired Concerto includes improvisatory elements for soloists and orchestra alike.
Avant-garde Japanese composer (who was once married to Yoko Ono and studied with composer-philosopher John Cage) Toshi Ichiyanagi’s ‘Interspace’, written for string quartet in 1986, uses a fascinating blend of Western and traditional elements.
One of the major composers of the 20th century, Witold Lutoslawski’s Preludes and Fugue for 13 Solo Strings demonstrates a wide range of rich atmospheric textures.
Impromptu by influential Finnish composer Sibelius will complete this bold, daring program.
