Homebody/Kabul | Theatre @ Risk Print
With HOMEBODY/KABUL, internationally acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner has turned his penetrating gaze to the arena of global politics to create this suspenseful portrait of a dangerous collision between cultures.

Written before 9-11, this play premiered in New York in December 2001 and has had subsequent highly successful productions across the UK and the US. Homebody/Kabul takes us on a compelling and epic journey into a world at odds with itself. It is a work of genius, rich with gripping language, mystique and cultural chaos.

An eccentric British tourist arrives in Kabul in 1999 and disappears in mysterious circumstances. As her husband and daughter search for her, or at least for her body, the lines between East and West, justice and injustice, fact and fiction blur irrevocably.

Tony Kushner is best known for his epic two-part masterpiece Angels in America, chosen by London’s National Theatre as one of the 10 best plays of the 20th century. His other plays include: Caroline or Change, A Bright Room Called Day and Widows with Ariel Dorfman. He also co-wrote the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s film Munich (for which he was nominated for an Academy Award).

Director Chris Bendall has assembled a brilliant cast for the Australian premiere production of this riveting new work by Green Room awardwinning company Theatre @ Risk. Led by Jane Nolan in the title role of The Homebody, the play also features the remarkable talents of Rob Meldrum (last seen with Theatre @ Risk in Arabian Night) alongside Shahin Shafaei (who inspired, and performed in Through the Wire). Renowned architect and theatre designer Peter Corrigan will be designing, while Jethro Woodward is composing the original score.

“The most remarkable play in a decade. Without a doubt the most important of our time." New York Observer

“This eerily timely work about Afghanistan is mesmerizing and mournful, vast and intimate, emotionally generous and stylistically fabulist, wildly verbal, politically progressive and scarily well informed.”

"A fusion of politics, poetry and boundless empathy transformed into passionate, juicy theatre." New York Times
