Joe Jackson Print
Joe JacksonAfter two decades as a solo artist, Joe Jackson returns to his roots - reforming with the original Joe Jackson Band to embark on an international tour that comes to Australia commencing in Brisbane on Tuesday 20May and includes performances in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Perth.

The reason? The launch of the long-awaited new Joe Jackson album, Rain.

Recorded in Berlin and mixed in New York, Rain features ten new songs and the striking, pared-back sound of piano, bass, drums with, of course, his uniquely yearning vocals.

“There is no padding on it at all; the album is stripped to the bare essentials, so I hope it has a timeless quality,” Joe Jackson says of the album he describes as “elemental”. “The title seems to fit.”

Following his break-through hit, Is She Really Going Out With Him?, on 1979’s Look Sharp album, the UK-born singer/songwriter then scored world-wide success with 1982’s Top Ten album, Night And Day, which featured the classics Real Men and Breaking Us In Two, and has received an impressive five Grammy nominations in a career spanning three decades.

Now, in 2008, this talented performer is coming to Australia with Rain and the original members of his acclaimed Joe Jackson Band - Graham Maby on bass and vocals and Dave Houghton on drums and vocals.

The mood on Rain mixes the occasional melancholic moment with a combination of swing, sophistication and the snappy social observations for which Jackson has always been so acclaimed. Performing it live, along with so many of the hits that have won him a legion of fans across the world, Jackson will leave fans with no doubt of his distinctive talents.

When Jackson sings - we all understand. Whether it is of the small moment of recognition between potential lovers (Rush Across The Road), an examination of yearning and regret in an affair gone wrong (Wasted Time), or just the achingly real glimpses into human vulnerability (Too Tough) - on Rain, Jackson wears the influences of classic Blue Note artists such as Horace Silver and Art Blakey on his sleeve.

Having spent twenty years of his life living in New York before re-settling in Berlin, there is still a mature urbanity in his music, with Rain's adventurous spirit recalling Jackson's best-selling 1982 album, Night And Day.

Don't miss out on Rain when it comes to Australia. It's what we've all been waiting for.
