A collaboration between Victorian Opera and Malthouse Theatre, Through the Looking Glass entwines the real and the imaginary in a vivid musical world created by leading theatre and opera composer, Alan John (Eighth Wonder, Hedda Gabler) and first-time librettist Andrew Upton (Co-Artistic Director of Sydney Theatre Company).
Conductor Richard Gill and director Michael Kantor embark on a journey where head-spinning puns and philosophical conundrums are conjured by a stellar cast comprising Kanen Breen, Margaret Haggart, David Hobson, Suzanne Johnson, Gary Rowley and Dimity Shepherd.
Travelling beyond the bounds of conventional opera, Through the Looking Glass explores the wondrous world that Carroll created while on a boating trip with his young muse, Alice Liddell.
“On Monday we set sail with Carroll’s extraordinary, nonsensical language” said Victorian Opera Music Director Richard Gill. “The singers have all been warned to ‘Beware the Jabberwock’ as we take our first steps off the page and onto the stage.”
