From Little Things is the story of two lovers, one Anglo-Australian, the other Chinese-Australian, living in the same country yet inhabiting different worlds. Traversing back and forth in time, the audience is taken on a journey through memories and myths brought vividly to life through martial arts, dance, storytelling, music and song.
We visit battle-fields in ancient China, the gold fields of Bendigo, present-day Melbourne and the many decades in between. Through re-discovering the stories of their ancestors, the lovers weave their disparate lives together to create a new shared history and a deeper understanding of the basic humanity which connects us all.
From Little Things is the inaugural production of the Australasian Chinese Theatre Company. The ACT has a mission to create and produce intrinsically cross-cultural performances with elements borrowed and fused from Australasian/English and Chinese traditions, ancient and modern.
The ACT was founded by Dr Moni Lai Storz, an ethnic Chinese born in Malaysia who came to Australia in 1964. Moni is a speaker, cross cultural trainer and published writer and poet. Aurora Kurth is an award-winning singer, actor and theatre maker. Recent career highlights include her sold-out solo show Take the L out of Lover for the Malthouse Theatre in 2007 and ChamberMade’s Walkabout in 2005 at ACMI. Joshua Ongso is a past champion gymnast and ballet dancer whose extraordinary skills together with his experiences as an émigré from Malaysia bring a unique perspective to this physically demanding role.
All proceeds from ACT productions will go to charities. The proceeds of From Little Things will go to the Mirabel Foundation, established in 1998 in Melbourne to assist children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to parental illicit drug use.
