Following a successful premiere season of Seven at the 2008 Adelaide Fringe (Winner - Fringe Award for Best Dance) – Leigh Warren & Dancers will be back entertaining Adelaide audiences in late June/early July with Impulse - an exhilarating new collaborative production celebrating the unique and often unpredictable relationship which exists between music and dance.
Impulse sees Leigh Warren & Dancers team up with the innovative South Australian string ensemble, Zephyr Quartet – to present two dance works: Impulse and Shimmer.
Shimmer was highly acclaimed in its premiere season and won both the inaugural Adelaide Critics’ Circle prize in 1997 and ‘Best Choreography’ at the Australian Dance Awards in 1999. Set to a sumptuous score that leaps from the joyous tones of SA composer Graeme Koehne’s Shaker Dancers – which explores the ecstatic dances of the American Shakers – this mesmerising work has been reinvented for the 21st Century. In 2008, the original creative team – Leigh Warren (artistic director/ choreographer), Mary Moore (set & costume design) and Geoff Cobham (lighting design) – return to fulfil ideas not possible in previous seasons and fans of the original work can expect an entirely new experience.
Shimmer will be paired with a second dance work - Impulse, featuring the witty and sensual strains of Michael Nyman’s Second Quartet. The name is inspired by the relationship between music and dance and the production explores how music can propel dance, inspire it, direct it and shape it – and how movement becomes the materialisation of the sound itself.
