In 2007, a very unusual show with a very unusual name scored a rave
review from the theatre critic at The West Australian “… there is much
to enjoy in this faux-French confection … a smorgasbord of comedy and
satire peppered throughout with iconic showstoppers and popular music
hits… the comedy is broad…with some exquisite satirical touches.”
The show was Club Gargouille (Episode 2) devised and directed by George
White with a vibrant young cast led by acclaimed local actor, Igor Sas
playing Modo, half-brother to Quasimodo. French for gargoyle,
Gargouille (pronounced gar-gooey) is the name of an intimate cabaret
club deep in the foundations of the famous Notre Dame cathedral run by
Modo.
Now Modo and his zany staff at Club Gargouille return to Rechabites
Hall from April 23 for an even more hilarious, madcap season of new
adventures and exhilarating music in Episode 3 – The Return of
Quasimodo.
Episode 3 is full of more hilarious sketches, catchy popular songs
accompanied by a four piece band and lots of audience participation
with the ever-talented, Sas leading a brilliant group of young actors
and singers, including David Bowyer, Corey Hannan, Chris Harris,
Michael Wright, Rhiannon Davies, Elaine Konijn, Shana O’Shea and
Michelle Thomson. The band is led by Musical Director, Nicole Dagostino
with choreography by Pamela Konijn.
Director, George White said that this episode at Club Gargouille was
another madcap cabaret full of songs, dance and more outlandish twists
than the Da Vinci Code. “This is the fondue of cabaret – very gar-gooey
- with lots of brilliant opportunities for the cast to excel,” he said.
“Elements of cabaret, theatre, musical and satirical melodrama fuse
together in a fantastical romp.”
The club has been chosen to present the grand opening of the “Festival
of Fools”. Not only must they decide on the program to be performed but
also which fools they should invite to participate. Their preparations
are initially hindered by the arrival of a number of unexpected
visitors, not the least being Darth Vader. However, when they receive
the incredible news that Quasimodo is alive and living in Australia and
is about to travel to Paris for the festival, the situation becomes
chaotic.
