RETURNING AFTER A SELL-OUT SEASON AT THE BLUE ROOM IN 2006
Winner - Best Actor 2006 WA Equity Guild Awards
Winner - Best Production 2007 Blue Room Awards
Thomas Papathanassiou’s Looming the Memory at The Rechabites’ Hall from 7 – 17 May is a show for anyone who has travelled from across the world to make Australia their home, or who have parents who did.
In the cellar of a house in a Greek village, an old woman whispers to herself as she weaves on her loom. In Australia, her grandson tries to understand his life as he unravels the family stories passed down to him.
Growing up with memories that don’t make sense, he journeys back to Greece to visit his family. Along the way he uncovers the darkness of his family’s past and is forced to confront his concept of what home means and where he belongs.
Thomas says: “The response to Looming the Memory at The Blue Room two years ago was overwhelming and people still approach me about it! Since then I’ve spent three months with my grandmother in the village in Greece and wanted the chance to add to my tale. So with kind support from the City of Perth, I’m presenting a return season for those who couldn’t get tickets the first time, and also for those who want to see it again.”
Told in English with a splash of Greek, Looming the Memory is a thinly disguised memoir of one man’s struggle growing up with his heart in two parts of the world - Greece and Australia. This solo show explores the idea that our family stories play an integral part in shaping who we are.
Eighteen characters including Greek grandmothers, ghosts, and a chicken are bought to life in an honest, sensitive and often comic 70 minutes. Journey with Thomas into myth, memory, and identity through powerful story-telling and engaging physical theatre.
"a polished, confident performance...real tears, at times, real joy…there’s an obvious pride in his Greek heritage..." The West Australian
“This man tells his story so vividly there is a sense of complete involvement, of getting lost in the story…this is an emotional and thought provoking piece I thoroughly recommend, 4½ out of 5 - theatreguide.com.au
